The Final - History in the Making

The camera has done an excellent job of shaping photography as we know it today. Based on different models, you can virtually do anything you want, of course, depending on your budget and how well you experiment and get to know your camera. I feel that without the camera, photography today would be non existent, so therefore through this assignment I planned to follow history in the steps of some of the great artists who have come before me.
I myself have always been fascinated with older model cameras, I think they themselves are very interesting and it is always interesting to see where something started and to where things are now. The main influence I had was particularily women photographers taking self portraits of themselves with the particular camera of whatever the era may be that they were in at that time. Particularily photographers like: Diane Arbus, Ilse Bing, Sue Ford, and the highly recognized Cindy Sherman.
For this assignment, I wanted to capture cameras of different eras and show how different the ages were. Unfortunately, it didn't work out the exact way that I had planned, with me being sick and all, but the assignment was quite challlenging for me, which I am happy with because with this being my final assignment, I didn't just want to play it safe. When creating this series, I used the self timer on my camera and a tripod to set up each shot. The actual number of pictures in the series is insignificant, they just happened to be the only ones that I liked.

Cheers and Enjoy!

Reasoning Behind a Series - Assignment from class on Wednesday, November 9

Okay so the goal of this is to find a reason or a purpose for particular artists creating a series. We were assigned to find four different photograhers.

1. Michael Winokur:
As I was looking through different series, I found this particular photographer, which has nothing to do with the theme that I have planned to use,  I just thought it was interesting. I couldn't find anywhere where it stated plainly in black and white the reason for this particular series, but I found one that really stuck out to me about people running. On his portfolio, like I said, he didn't give an exact reasoning for creating the series, but he talked a lot about emotion and the different brands that the people were wearing, so that could be a valid reason, I just wasn't sure.

Series 1:

2. August Bradley:
- New York: Aviator Series
(Copied straight from the portfolio.)
"I recently did a WWII aviator concept shoot for a film in development.
The images feature actress Ina Kopp who is a prominent name in film and tv in parts of Europe, and is now making a move to the American scene. Wardrobe by Louis Verdad.
It was fun shooting at the air field with the classic planes and all the wind and smoke. We shot in an airplane hanger and out on the runway, but space was tight as both were crowded with other planes and equipment.
These are actual planes from the WWII era. The distressed one was underwater for 40 years — set designers couldn’t build that very easily.
Had to keep our footprint small, and be in and out quickly so used one power pack (Verso) with two or three heads off of it. Played with colored gels to create subtle mixed colors in the light. Wind machine, smoke machine, and two great assistants. All shot on Hasselblad 39 megapixel."

3. David Friedman Photography:
I found this as a part of an inventor series. All he gave as a reason for this series is this: "Necessity is the mother of invention. I want to photograph the rest of the family."
So, here is a series of one of the inventors that he interviewed: Tony Pagoto.
Tony invented a system that keeps the overwhelming mess of unruly wires under your desk tidy.

4. David Ahntholz:
"Forbidden Freedom" Series:
Guatemala has become the source of most of the human trafficking cases uncovered recently in Southwest Florida, including two cases from neighboring villages hidden in the highlands of Huehuetenango, in the western Highlands of Guatemala. Children as young as 10 from this region are crossing the border alone, and it's not rare to find 12- and 13-year-old children traveling the Central American migrant corridor headed for the United States. Families are often happy to see their children make the trip to the United States in spite of the dangers. The young indigenous Guatemalans are willingly smuggled into the United States to help provide for their families mired in poverty in Guatemala, but after arriving in their new home, the victims often end up as slaves with no way to escape.

Out of class work

So, I just wanted to catch you guys up on some of the things that I was working on outside of class. My best friend is getting married in May, and she asked me to do some engagement shots of her and her fiance, Ryne. These are some of my favorites and I just wanted to share them with you guys. I had a lot of fun shooting them and hope you guys enjoy a couple of the shots that I took. Enjoy :D

I found myself liking the black and white images better, just because I myself really enjoy black and white images. Like I said, this is just a little teaser I thought I would share with you guys. Feel free to leave comments, if you want!

Color Editing with 3 Point Lighting Pt. 2

Okay, so this assignment was the same as the last one. Original image, color image, and black and white image. Except only this time we chose to use a green lights as one of our three lights to see what different effect we could get using the different color of light.

Post from Monday, October 17, 2011

So Monday, apparently I didn't get the memo about bringing your camera, so the image I chose to edit was one of the ones that we took on Wednesday. The assignment was to demonstrate 3 point lighting, and since I didn't have any lights of my own, I just chose to use this one.  The assignmment was to demonstratte three point lighting, then edit the orginal image with a color and black and white image.

Color Edit: I wasn't really sure what to do with this because of the large shadow cast on her face.

Black and White Edit: This one was my favorite of the two.
